When a bus or train is late or cancelled, you are not without rights. Local transport is covered by the respective transport association's mobility guarantee; regional and long-distance services are additionally covered by statutory passenger rights.
If your connection is significantly late, you can often switch to another means of transport (for example a taxi or a hire bike) and get part of the cost reimbursed. The exact amounts and conditions are set by your transport association's mobility guarantee.
If the journey is cancelled entirely, you are entitled to a reasonable alternative or a proportionate refund. Keep your ticket and note the line, stop, time and reason.
Document the delay, keep your ticket and receipts, and file the refund claim in time. If the operator does not help, the national arbitration body for public transport (söp) can step in.
General information, not legal advice in an individual case. Amounts and deadlines follow the association's applicable transport and passenger-rights terms in force at the time.
